A Mystery: Why Are Humans the Only Ones Ashamed of Nudity?
Chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants and other intelligent animals aren't embarrassed to be naked. So why are humans uniquely ashamed of nudity?
They wore clothes because it was cold 👉 Plausible. Humans in cold regions would have protected their bodies with hides and fur. But even in hot Africa, there were cultures that covered the genitals. Something doesn't add up.
It was to protect women from aggressive men 👉 Then why did men cover up? It doesn't explain that.
Insects, thorns, hygiene 👉 But people feel ashamed to be naked even inside a clean hut. This has nothing to do with practicality.
Status or tradition 👉 People are fine without a hat or necklace, so why are the genitals so special?
In the end, nobody knows. Ask people in traditional tribal societies and they'll give the reasons above, but not the root cause. They'll say their ancestors always lived that way.
People are wary of snakes even if no one teaches them. It's instinct. Could shame about nudity be something like that, a primal emotion written into our genes?
According to the Bible, the first humans were naked and not ashamed. Then, deceived by the serpent, they disobeyed God's word, became aware of their bodies, realized they had lost their innocence, and covered themselves with fig leaves. And Eve was told she would bear children in pain.
Come to think of it, it's also strange that, along with shame, humans are the only species that suffers such intense pain in childbirth.
