It took about as long as drinking a cup of coffee. On October 29, 2026, attackers identified as North Korean drained about $6.36 billion from Binance wallets spread across 10 blockchains, and most of it was gone in just 20 minutes.

It was the largest cryptocurrency theft ever, about four times the size of the 2025 Bybit hack, and its starting point was a single employee's laptop. Through it, the attackers broke into the withdrawal approval system, and preparations had begun at least 36 hours earlier.

Binance has promised to cover the losses in full, but how many financial companies in the world could fill a $6.3 billion hole at once? Even before this incident, North Korea had passed $1 billion in thefts this year within nine months, and this single heist rivals its entire cumulative haul since 2017.

The Villain Has Gotten Hold of AI

Even scarier news came out the very next day. According to an analysis by Microsoft, all eight North Korea-linked hacking groups are using AI or expanding their use of it, and three of them have already made it part of their daily work.

AI churns out dozens of phishing documents tailored to each target in a matter of minutes, and it pastes fake faces onto stolen ID cards to help get jobs at foreign companies. Once inside, it raises privileges, steals credentials, and analyzes security systems to avoid detection.

What used to take several skilled hackers weeks, AI now finishes in minutes. For now, humans are still in command and AI assists them, but Microsoft warned that the shift to agentic AI that acts on its own has already begun.

The Day the Two Come Together

North Korea can steal $6.3 billion in 20 minutes by human hands, and that same North Korea is bringing AI into every stage of its attacks. It has not yet been confirmed whether AI was used in the Binance hack, but the moment these two fully merge, attacks will reach a whole new level.

An "employee" who got through hiring with an AI-generated face and résumé logs into a bank's internal network, and a deepfake that clones an executive's face and voice orders a huge transfer. AI that never sleeps hammers financial institutions around the world at the same time, 24 hours a day, and automates even the work of splitting up and hiding the money, cutting 20 minutes down to 2.

This time, $3 billion could be frozen because there was time to trace it. When that time disappears, so does the money we can catch.

It Has to Be Stopped Within 20 Minutes

If hackers attack with AI, financial institutions must defend with AI too; people watching monitors cannot stop a 20-minute attack. Real-time AI detection of suspicious transactions, multi-person approval so that money cannot leave even if one employee is compromised, and stronger identity checks for remote hiring are urgent.

As this $3 billion freeze shows, cooperation across borders between financial institutions and law enforcement is also essential. No single company can take on a national hacking unit by itself.

Conclusion

Wars of the past began with missiles, but the wars of the future will begin quietly on someone's laptop. On the day villains and AI fully join hands, $6.3 billion will be remembered not as a record but as a starting point.

Saying the whole world's financial system will be robbed all at once may be an exaggeration, but saying it will be robbed more often, faster, and on a bigger scale is not. In the age of AI, financial security is national security, and a war that never stops, 24 hours a day, has already begun.
