For a Restless Mind, High-Intensity Interval Exercise Beats Meditation · Hayera Note (Free to use)
When restless thoughts flood in (worry, anxiety, nervousness, anger, jealousy, obsession, regret, craving), people say, "Meditate. Empty your mind." But trying to stop thinking when your head is already full only makes it harder. Tell yourself not to think about something and you think about it more. Meditation helps, but it isn't easy for beginners.

Sitting still can make it worse

Research clearly shows that lack of physical activity raises the risk of depression. A 2020 meta-analysis (12 studies, 128,000 people) and a later, larger analysis (25 studies, over 250,000 people) confirmed that sedentary living, especially passive habits like watching TV, raises the risk of depression.
When you sit still, the brain doesn't rest. Instead, the default mode network switches on and enters "thinking mode," replaying the past and worrying about the future. You end up in a vicious cycle of past regrets and future worries.

The rapid effect of high-intensity exercise

Exercise, on the other hand, lowers the body's stress response. A 2024 systematic review (31 studies, 1,386 people) found that even a single bout of exercise reduced physiological stress responses like blood pressure and cortisol, and the higher the intensity, the bigger the effect. Another meta-analysis (58 studies, 3,038 people) found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improved mental well-being and reduced perceived stress.
When restless thoughts start, exercise hard enough to get out of breath for just one minute. Gradually increase to two minutes, then five. Then check right away how your stress level changed.

Don't try to beat thoughts with thoughts. Exercise changes the state from which you look at the problem. When your body moves, your brain focuses on the body in the present, the cycle of restless thinking breaks, and you get in shape at the same time.
