Islam was once the center of the world

Early Islam was a civilization hungry for learning. Baghdad's House of Wisdom and the libraries of Córdoba led the world in mathematics, medicine and astronomy, and there was a time when Europe learned by translating Islamic texts. But a thousand years later, the positions of the two civilizations have completely reversed. What caused this reversal?

Muslim-majority nations that became poor

The 57 member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) are home to about 25 percent of the world's population but produce only about 8.5 percent of the world's nominal GDP. A civilization where one in four people on Earth lives produces less than a tenth of the world economy. Even more striking, 25 of the 50 poorest countries by GDP per capita are OIC members.

"But Saudi Arabia and Qatar are rich," you might say. These figures already include all the oil-rich states. Even adding the oil money of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, only seven OIC members make the world's top 50 by GDP per capita, and most are small oil states with populations of a few million. Their wealth comes not from institutions and industrial competitiveness but from what's pumped out of the ground.

Is it colonialism or the lack of separation of religion and state?

Is it colonialism? Korea was a colony too. Military rule? South Korea and Taiwan had military regimes too. No separation of religion and state? Medieval Europe was ruled by popes. Lack of resources? As we just saw, giving them resources doesn't fix it. The same goes for blaming geography, great powers or war: there are counterexamples, countries that went through the same conditions and rose anyway. Control for these variables one by one and one thing is left: what kind of structure religion created inside society.

Europe opened up the interpretation of Scripture

Even when the Church monopolized the space between God and humans, Luther and Calvin declared that "God and the individual meet directly." When the Bible was translated into every language and individuals began reading it themselves, literacy exploded, and Prussia and Scandinavia, where the Reformation spread first, became the first regions in Europe to wipe out illiteracy. Max Weber argued that this structure of faith led to an ethic of hard work and saving. Centuries of theological debate became fuel for the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution.

A thousand years in chains

Around the 10th century, according to the traditional account, Islam's major schools of law effectively declared that "the gates of ijtihad (independent interpretation) were closed." Figures like Calvin and Luther, had they appeared, risked execution or exile. As the authority to interpret doctrine concentrated in a small religious elite, Islamic legal institutions became shackles that hindered private capital accumulation, the corporation and large-scale production.
While European merchants built capital across generations through banks and joint-stock companies, Islamic inheritance law divided property almost evenly among heirs. In a society where a business couldn't outlive its owner, an industrial revolution was impossible.

Europe ruled by God vs. Islam ruled by jurists

Europe broke the authority that monopolized God's place, and as individuals became people who read, questioned and took responsibility, the system kept updating.
On the other side, as the gates of interpretation closed, law, education and economic institutions froze in the Middle Ages. In the end, you could see it as the difference between God ruling and religious leaders ruling. The evidence: Muslim-majority countries that have pursued institutional reform, like Türkiye, Indonesia and Malaysia, are the ones pulling ahead.
