Was There an Advanced Civilization Before Humans? A Fact Check — Ancient Civilizations
Was There an Advanced Civilization Before Humans? A Fact Check · Hayera Note (Free to use)
The story that "there was another advanced civilization before humans" circulates from time to time. It's not just a conspiracy theory: it gets tied to a paper by NASA scientists (the "Silurian hypothesis") and spreads in a fairly convincing form. The evidence offered is chilling every time. Here are the most common pieces.

First, rock layers from 56 million years ago show a sudden spike in carbon (the PETM), supposedly just like our Industrial Revolution. Second, traces of a natural nuclear reactor that ran 1.7 billion years ago were found in Gabon, Africa (Oklo). Third, radiation left by nuclear tests has a half-life of 80 million years, so it would remain hundreds of millions of years later. Fourth, the Earth is a giant eraser, so the more eco-friendly a civilization was, the more completely its traces were wiped away, and we'll never find them.

Listening to this, you start to think, "Maybe there really was one?" But check them one by one and most of this evidence collapses.

1. Carbon spiked "exactly the same"? Actually, the opposite

This is the scariest and most repeated part: carbon spiked back then just like now, so wasn't there a civilization? The fact is the opposite. We're releasing carbon roughly ten times faster than happened then. It's not similar; we're far more extreme. And that very difference in speed is what lets scientists tell whether nature or humans did it. Contrary to "it's so similar we can't tell the difference," the truth is "the speed is different, so we can tell." The most important point has been reported backwards.

2. The radiation claim attaches the wrong element

You often hear that "plutonium left by nuclear tests has a half-life of 80 million years, so it will remain hundreds of millions of years later." That's a mix-up. The 80-million-year isotope is plutonium-244, but what nuclear tests actually spread on the ground is plutonium-239, with a half-life of only about 24,000 years. And plutonium-244 is barely produced by humans at all. A big, impressive number got attached to the wrong thing. The number was inflated just to scare.

3. The Oklo reactor is actually evidence of "no civilization"

The 1.7-billion-year-old natural reactor is used as "See, there was nuclear power back then." But it wasn't made by anyone. Nature made it on its own. In other words, it's counter-evidence: "Strange things like this can happen without people." Here's a common contradiction in these claims. On one hand they say, "When you see something strange, suspect nature first," and on the other hand they get excited about a carbon spike: "Isn't that a civilization?" They break their own rule.

4. The paper itself says flatly, "This is not evidence of a civilization"

This is the most important part. The two NASA scientists who came up with the hypothesis wrote plainly in their paper that they were not claiming an ancient civilization existed. It isn't "we found an ancient civilization" but a thought exercise: "If there had been one, how would we find its traces?" The real aim was to think about how to search for alien civilizations and about the traces we're leaving on Earth now. But that "this is not our claim" warning is usually cut out, and the thought experiment spreads as if it were a real discovery.

More holes

First, resources. If there had been an industrial civilization, it would have used up the shallow coal, oil and metal deposits long ago. But they're still here, intact. That means nobody used them first.
Second, look at the Moon. With no wind or rain, anything left there can last hundreds of millions of years. Yet not a single object left by an ancient civilization has been found on the Moon.
And "the Earth erases everything" is an exaggeration. We really do dig up plants from 300 million years ago and the millimeter-thin layer that marks the extinction of the dinosaurs. A continent-scale civilization evaporating without a single trace is an unreasonable assumption.
